I use www.easynews.com for my usenet account. It is an html access site so I don't have to set any news group through a reader or other connection program.

Pros
Full bandwidth downloads.
Large catalog of files and newsgroups.
No ip connection with other people so I don't need to worry about the odd chance of hooking up to a anti-piracy tracker or company.
Don't have to worry about connection speeds or seeder counts.

Cons
Cost a few bucks a month.
A lot of files I don't care to have access to.

How hard is it to find files.. With bittorrent I like that I can read the comments and stay away from infected or bullshiit files..

Over the 6 years I have been on newsgroups I have only had 1 infection and maybe a handful of times that I downloaded something and it wasn't what it was supposed to be.

On that note I used newshosting.com and use GrabIT to download the files. On my FIOS I download at 3mb/sec all the time. I use newzleech.com to find files and often visit scenereleases.info for ideas/new items.

I use astraweb for access. Their normal price for true uncapped unlimited access is $15/mo (they have a $10/mo plan but it is speed capped to 1mbps), but if you poke around the net, you can often find promo codes to get it for $11/mo. Has SSL, good retention, etc like any other good provider. They have well priced block accounts too if you are a casual user and dont want to pay monthly.

Software I use Newsleecher. It is the only piece of software I have ever payed for besides a few games to have a legit key to play online. Newsleecher kicks ass. It has "supersearch" function which does all the legwork for you and pretty much lets it work just like napster, kazaa, etc back in the day. Basicly put in what you are searching for, catagory, can set other paramaters like min or max size, etc, and it spits out your matches all grouped together and simply click to download. It also has repair/extract feature that when enabled will automaticly extract the archive to a folder and delete the archive so what you download is right there ready to use with rar's thrown out for you. It also has all the tools to interface the groups and all manually for all the old school people that actually know what usenet is all about and want to use it manually like back in the day.

biggest advantage is you max out your connection speed downloading every time the whole time, like downloading normal files from the internet, and not limited to other people's shiatty connections, meaning those big files download in minutes rather then hours or days.

next it is either available or its not. None of this find a torrent, but no one is actually hosting it (or in other words dead), or like a whole 2 people on a really crap connection hosting it.

another big one is you arent simultaniously uploading/sharing/distributing the illegal content yourself, so still while not exactly legal to be downloading that illegal content, you arent distributing it/making it available to others as well which has always been the primary target of those letters and shiat. I have yet to see any mention of anyone getting a letter or anything from using usenet thus far. It all seems to be from straight up sharing like torrents, limewire, etc.

I used newshosting.com and GrabIt also. Although, I also signed up for the GrabIt search feature so that everything was integrated into a single application. That's one of the things that I really liked about it.

edit: Also, the comments on torrent trackers are not just for spotting virues and stuff. It's also good for determining the quality. For instance, you'll often find several different versions of a movie. By reading the comments, you can find out which one is the best one to get. People will compare them and let everybody know which one's the best. Also, they'll typically post screenshots as well. So you'll know if even the best version is worth your time. Also, for applications whose cracks/serials no longer work, you'll see it posted in the comments sections. Also, when an app requires a rather complication procedure for cracking, and the instructions provided in the readme suck (or are just plain wrong), you'll find the correct way in the comments. They'll also help you troubleshoot if you still can't get it to work.

I think I signed up for that also, but I never use it for some reason. GrabIT is nice, but can be slow at times extracting the files...

I never used the built-in extraction tools. I still preferred to use quickpar and winrar.

I may do that. I only have the fast DSL plan because I want my up speed high so I can share faster...but with usenet, no sharing req and I could decrease my plan. Hmmmmmm
